Junior Safety Patrol
The Fremont Junior Safety Patrol has been in existence for nearly 30 years. It is the result of a partnership between the Police Department, the Fremont Unified School District, and the California State Automobile Association, (CSAA).
Participation by each of the elementary schools is voluntary. Each school provides either a staff member or parent volunteer who organizes and supervises the Patrol. Fifth and sixth grade students are selected for the Patrol based upon merit, attendance, and good citizenship. Members of the Patrol take a post at school crossings and work to ensure the safety of fellow students.
The police department provides training, safety lectures, and an ongoing enforcement effort in areas surrounding the schools. School staff and/or parent volunteers provide direct supervision and support, while equipment for the Safety Patrol is provided by CSAA, at either a substantially reduced cost, or no cost at all.
Each year, the police department sponsors a Junior Safety patrol picnic and recognition ceremony at Lake Elizabeth. At this event, over 700 students enjoy pizza, games, and demonstrations by various units within the Police department.
The Junior Safety Patrol faces the challenges of population growth and the increase of vehicles around the schools on a daily basis. The driving public can do their part by driving with extra care and caution in the area of Fremont schools. Please observe the 25 mile per hour speed limits, and observe all pedestrian crossing laws.
If you would like information on becoming a school crossing guard or general information please contact the Fremont Police Traffic Unit at 510/790-6760.
