Fremont Police Support Special Olympics of Northern California
The Fremont Police Department, along with the international law enforcement community, has had a longstanding relationship with the Special Olympics.
Our Mission Statement: We carry the “Flame of Hope”, in partnership with Special Olympics Northern California, symbolizing courage, and celebration of diversity uniting our community.
Our Vision: Strive to provide awareness, support, and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities through education and charity events.
Special Olympics Philosophy
Special Olympics Philosophy is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Special Olympics believes that consistent training is essential to the development of sports skills, and that competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth. Through sports training and competition, people with intellectual disabilities benefit physically, mentally, socially and spiritually.
Fundraising Events and Activities
The Law Enforcement Torch Run® began in 1981 is a year-round national law enforcement fundraising campaign, which culminates with the carrying of the Flame of Hope to Special Olympics summer games competitions. Since 2004, the Fremont Police Department has raised more than $200,000 in support of Special Olympics Northern California.
Throughout the year funds are raised through a variety of activities. One of the more frequently hosted events includes the famous Tip-A-Cop® event. During a typical Tip-A-Cop® event, law enforcement volunteers take on the role as celebrity wait staff, helping to deliver food and drink refills, all for "tips" to help benefit Special Olympics. In addition to Tip-A-Cop®, the Fremont Fire and Police Department began collaborating in 2007 organizing an annual sporting charity competition. The departments have participated in basketball, softball, and bowling. With the support of our community the Fremont Police Department has made large strides in benefiting the cause. We hope to continue our partnership with Special Olympics for many years to come. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at one of our events!
